Roxy's White Trash Bash

Just a quick recap of Roxy's White Trash Bash:

- Hay everywhere! Who had to clean that up?
- An amazing outdoor display of trashy-ness, complete with washer machine, plastic swimming pool, and overalls.
- A display of wrestling/domestic violence (it was staged, calm down).
- Gator Wrestling (though I missed this, due to it happening at 2 am -- a clear trick at getting people to stay until closing time, no doubt).
- Girls getting down and dancing, white trash style

The BEST Pizza Downtown

For a long time now, there has been a common, well-known pizza joint that has been popular among downtown Orlando frequenters. Everyone has waited in line for far too long for a slice there and paid $4 for their trouble. No more, I say.

The best pizza in Orlando is just a block away, at Panino's. As an unbiased, non-compensated bystander, I let my taste buds do the deciding.

Now, in all fairness, it is a close race; but, nevertheless a race that the small shop on Orange Avenue has won by more than a nose. Toss in their FREE beer offer with the purchase of two slices and my heart is theirs.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for a great slice. My New York roots won't let me love the "other" pizza available downtown, despite it's long-standing relationship with downtowners.

So, it's been written. The BEST pizza in downtown Orlando is Panino's. Enjoy.

Takin' it to the Streets...

November 4, 2008 -- Election Night

The Guest List has no party affiliation. I have no party affiliation. Here is what I saw:

People of all races--White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc., taking to the streets in celebration.

People of all races--White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc., hugging and shouting "Yes we can. Yes we did."

People of all races--White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc., peacefully expressing joy on top of their cars, blocking Orange Avenue, honking their horns, and waving banners proudly.

Tonight, I saw something I was proud to witness. Not because of who won or what party was triumphant, but because of the way Orlando reacted. If you're interested, check out the photos in the photo gallery to see more of what occurred.

It was time for a change, he said.

Halloween in Orlando

Halloween is one of the most popular nights for craziness, mayhem, and partying in Orlando. I fully expect to see beautiful women inappropriately clad for the weather. Hurray!

Here are a few of the Halloween parties I know about:

- PlazaWeen VIII @ Wall Street -- Expect serious fun with a full moon fright.
- Jekyll & Hyde Party @ Cheyenne -- A great venue with an interesting and appropriate liquor sponsor.
- Halloween @ Club V -- Where the old Paris used to be. Should be nuts with rumored celebrity appearances galore.

I'll be jumping around, taking pictures all over town, so I hope to see you out. If you know of other Halloween parties happening, please comment, e-mail, or find some way to get a hold of The Guest List, so we can photograph the silliness.

What's hot in Orlando?

Downtown has a scene. Metrowest has a scene. UCF has a scene. Hell, even Lake Buena Vista, Winter Park, and Longwood have scenes. It's all about where to go. The weekends downtown are good. Not great, but when at any given moment there are hundreds of people walking to and from various bars and clubs, downtown Orlando is at it's best. The weeknights leave more to the imagination, though.

What's the best spot on Tuesdays, Orlando? Wednesdays?

What are you all doing on Sunday nights? Interested in a little Rock Star Karaoke, perhaps?

Everyone likes to get out, you know. You're only young and beautiful for so long...

A Friday Night in Orlando (well, Metrowest really)

Sometimes Friday nights are awful and sometimes they're not. This Friday night was pretty decent thanks to Roll Bar inviting Carey Hart, from Hart & Huntington, out to play. Beyond Carey Hart being a completely gracious, pleasant, nice celebrity; Roll Bar really brought the house down with a few bands and a LOT of people. At the moment, the band names escape me, so I hope the band manager I met will read this post and comment the names of her band.

Not to be outdone on Friday Night in Metrowest, Tavern on the Lake packed the house with their very popular Latin Night. The only info I have on this particular event is that 500-700 Latin people come to party at Tavern on the Lake friday nights. The rest of what happens there is a mystery to me, because I'm very out of touch with my Spanish.

Throw in a little Blue Martini before last call and a Friday Night is made. This Friday being made, go check out the pictures from Carey Hart at Roll Bar, Tavern's Latin Night, and Blue Martini in the Photos section of the website you're on right now. Go ahead... it feels good.

Church Street

First and foremost, what the hell happened to Church Street? With the exception of some random moments on the weekends, the whole street is a dead zone. Now, for the purposes of this rant, let us break Church Street into two halves (much like everyone does, anyway). There's the Garland half and the Orange half. The Garland half is a venerable ghost town at this point, whereas the Orange half has specific nights that seem to be working (Wednesdays).

The Garland half is composed of mainly eateries, such as: Rustic Steak, Hamburger Mary's, Brick & Fire, and Ceviche. Again, the other other side of the coin is the Garland half, full of booze, girls, and music with: Antigua, Chillers, Latitudes, Big Belly, Mako's, 23, Oakroom, Backroom, and Dragon Room. However, people don't seem to realize that Ceviche has a very interesting, upscale club-type venue and the Cheyenne has pretty good drink specials. So, inevitably, the Garland half suffers the ills of this economy far worse than the Orange half.

But, is it really the economy? Is that what is stopping the weekday fun times? The weekends downtown still seem to have life. Hell, even the homeless are happier on the weekends. More people to engage in 14 second conversations that start with an anecdote and end with peddling.

Where have all the people gone, Orlando? Why not come out on a Monday night and have a fantastic time. Tuesday isn't a valuable work day anyway, it's a Tuesday.

In the end, we are all left to wonder what will come of Orlando's infamous Church Street. Once beloved, sometimes still fawned over, and evermore vacant, the cobbled streets of The City Beautiful call out to all of us; begging for the cautious-walking girls in heels, the button-up shirt wearing mafia, the "thugged" out crews, and you. When will we return?
